Bir Chilangang Basumatary, born on 1 February 1959, in Bongshigaon village in Dotma Kokrajhar, was a key figure in the Bodoland movement seeking a separate state in India. He was the founder chairman of the now defunct Bodoland Liberation Tiger (BLT) and was instrumental in the fight for the creation of Bodoland.

Basumatary is survived by his wife, Ramani Basumatary, as well as their two sons and a daughter. He passed away on 28 June 1997 after prolonged illness.
