He led the peaceful Bodoland Movement, aiming to create a new state called ‘Bodoland’ within Assam. Upendra Nath Brahma Early Life & Education
Upendra Nath Brahma, also called Thopen during his early years, was born on March 31, 1956, in Boragari village, Dotma, located in the Kokrajhar district of Assam, India. He was the youngest son among five siblings, born to Mr. Monglaram Brahma and Ms. Lefsri Brahma.
Brahma completed his matriculation examination in 1975 with the first division, earning letter marks in Mathematics. Afterward, he studied his Undergraduate at Kokrajhar College and later completed his Post Graduation at Gauhati University.
Upendra Nath Brahma Career
Upendra Nath Brahma was the President of the Goalpara District Students Union from 1978 to 1979.
Later, he served as the vice-president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) from 1981 to 1983, and eventually became its president in 1986.
He focused on education and community welfare during his leadership, aiming to preserve the cultural identity of the community. He also encouraged the ABSU to include political issues in its agenda to enhance students’ understanding of politics.

The Bodo community commemorates the birth anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma on March 31st, which is celebrated as Students Day (known as Poraisa San in the Bodo language or Chatra Divas).
This day has been actively observed by the BTC government, ABSU and various Bodo organizations for many years.
However, since 2023, the Assam Government has also officially acknowledged March 31st as Students Day.
