The UPSC CSE Exam 2025: The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of India’s most prestigious competitive exams, conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for various services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

About Civil Service Exam 2025

The UPSC CSE Exam is a prestigious exam that recruits candidates for services like IAS, IPS, and IFS. It consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam: Objective test with two papers (GS and CSAT, qualifying in nature).
  2. Mains Exam: Descriptive papers, including an Essay, 4 General Studies papers, and two optional subject papers.
  3. Interview: Personality Test.

The entire process of the Indian civil services examination, from the notification of the preliminary examination to the declaration of the final results, takes place roughly within a year. Candidates who successfully clear the examination are recruited and trained for various Central Government services. After training, they are allocated different State Cadres based on their preferences, ranking, and vacancies available in each cadre.

The Union Public Service Commission will release the UPSC CSE Notification 2025 on its website on 22 January 2025 as per theĀ UPSC Exam Calendar 2025. The candidates can apply for Civil Service Exam till 11 February 2025.

UPSC CSE Exam Date 2025

CSE Prelims: The UPSC will conduct the CSE prelims examination on 25 May 2025 .The candidates will be selected based on their performances in written test and an interview conducted by the SSB.

CSE Mains: The UPSC will conduct the CSE mains examination on 22 Aug 2025 . The candidates will be selected based on their performances in written test and an interview conducted by the SSB. The exam duration of civil service mains exam 2025 is 5 days.

CSE Interview: The interview date for the CSE 2025 is not yet announced.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC CSE Exam 2025

The CSE has specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, age, educational qualifications, and the number of attempts.

Nationality

For IAS, IPS, and IFS, The candidate must be a citizen of India.

For other services, The candidate must either be:

  1. A citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
  3. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  4. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Education Qualification

  1. A candidate must hold a graduate degree from a recognized university or possess an equivalent qualification.
  2. Final-year students are also eligible to apply, provided they can submit proof of passing the required examination before the Main Exam.

Age Limit

General category: 21 to 32 years.

Age Relaxation:

  1. OBC: 3 years (up to 35 years).
  2. SC/ST: 5 years (up to 37 years).

Civil Services Number Of Attempts

General category: 6 attempts.
OBC: 9 attempts.
SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (until the upper age limit).

PwBD:
General: 9 attempts.
OBC/SC/ST: Unlimited (until the upper age limit).

UPSC Civil Service Exam Selection Process

The UPSC conduct the three stages of the exam or the selection process. The three stages of the exam are Prelims, Mains and Interviews.

  1. Civil Service Prelims Exam 2025- The CSE Prelims exam is the first stage of the examination, where the question type is two objective-type papers.
  2. Civil Service Mains Exam 2025- The CSE Mains exam is the second stage of the CSE exam, which is a written exam and lasts 5 days.
  3. Civil Service Interview 2025- The third stage of the selection process is an interview, where the SSB will ask specific questions.
