What is UPSC Indian Forest Service Exam ?
The Indian Forest Service (IFS/IFoS) Exam is a competitive examination conducted by India’s Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The IFS focuses specifically on managing, conserving, and protecting forests, wildlife, and natural resources in the country. The Indian Forest Service Examination is conducted once a year.
UPSC IFS Exam 2025 Notification
The Union Public Service Commission will release the UPSC IFoS Notification 2025 on its website on 22 January 2025 as per the UPSC Calendar 2025. The candidates can apply for IFS/IFoS exam till 11 February 2025.
The UPSC will conduct the IFS prelims examination on 25 May 2025 .The candidates will be selected based on their performances in written test and an interview conducted by the SSB.
The UPSC will conduct the IFS mains examination on 16 Nov 2025 .The candidates will be selected based on their performances in written test and an interview conducted by the SSB. The exam duration of Indian forest service main exam 2025 is 7 days.

Indian Forest Service Eligibility
The Indian forest service recruitment 2025 has specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, age, educational qualifications, and the number of attempts.
NATIONALITY
A candidate must be either :-
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
AGE LIMITS
A UPSC IFS candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on 1st August, 2025 which means he must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1993 and not later than 1st August, 2004.
Age Relaxation for Reserved Categories
- Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST): +5 years (maximum age: 37 years)
- Other Backward Classes (OBC): +3 years (maximum age: 35 years)
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): +10 years
- Ex-Servicemen: +5 years (if they meet certain conditions)
EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with at least one of the following subjects:

INDIAN FOREST SERVICE NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS
Every candidate appearing at the Examination who is eligible shall be permitted six attempts at the Examination. The number of attempts to candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible is allowed, including nine attempts at the Examination.
UPSC Indian Forest Service Exam Selection Process
The UPSC conduct the three stages of the exam or the selection process. The three stages of the exam are Prelims, Mains and Interviews.
Indian Forest Service Prelims Exam 2025- The IFS Prelims exam is the first stage of the examination, where the question type is two objective-type papers.
Indian Forest Service Mains Exam 2025- The IFS Mains exam is the second stage of the IFS exam, which is a written exam of 9 papers and lasts 7 days.
Indian Forest Service Interview 2025- The third stage of the selection process is an interview, where the SSB will ask specific questions.
